So, after planting lots of little seeds, watering them and waiting, I determined the location I chose for my test garden has a major fault: it's way too shady! Many sprouts came up and reached an inch or so in height, but due to the lack of sun, they began to lean, then bend, and finally most laid down and died. Not what I had invisioned, but a good real estate lesson: location, location, location!
I have moved two small fig trees from a sunnier spot and am starting over. I'll transplant some of the survivors and replant seeds this weekend; hopefully this will solve the problem. Of course, I do have to figure out how to outwit the curious squirrels who think they rule my yard. Any time I dig or even scratch around in the garden, they anxiously wait until I leave and then immediately inspect my work... digging little holes here and there to get a better view. What nosey little rascals! I have a sturdy screen that can protect some areas, but can't hope to cover the whole garden. We shall see how this contest plays out over the next month or so.
Now for better news... I transplanted a number of volunteers which had sprouted in my compost pile on a sunny side of the house, and viola! I have two cantelopes (may be ready for Thanksgiving) and a number of tomato plants setting blossoms... maybe I'll get some produce this year after all!
Also, the green beans I planted have blossomed and are producing; a Blue Lake and a Ruby. I'll have to plant more next time, though, to harvest enough for a meal. As it is, there are only enough for a veggie medley or soup, but the flavor is wonderful!
My Florida gardening book lists lots of veggies that can be planted over the next several months, so I expect to have more successes before this season is over...
I can't wait to taste the cantelopes, though... nothing tastes as sweet as a surprise!
